In a Group G qualifier in Damascus, the resurgent UAE silenced over 40,000 passionate fans. Syria and the Emirati side fought to a nil-nil draw before the break but Firas al Khatib scored the opener for the host in the 49th minute, triggering celebrations among the spectators at the stadium and those who had glued to their TVs. But the Syrians' jubilation was short-lived as the visitor fought back and spoiled their party with three goals in 15 minutes.

"FIDE Announces Iran Host to 2004 Asian Chess Challenge"
Iran's bid for hosting the Asian boys' and girls' chess events in 2004 was agreed by the International Chess Federation, FIDE, Saturday. During the 74th FIDE summit in Halkidiki, northern Greece, Iran was authorized to hold the Asian under-18 boys' and under-20 girls' chess competitions. Iran has also offered its bid for the first continental
juniors and youth event.

"Iran's Mahjoub Wins Sharjah Chess Title"
Iran's international chess master Morteza Mahjoub celebrated "Master Cup" title of Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates, Friday night. During the 11-round chess challenge, the Iranian bagged eight points, said the federation. Mahjoub fought to a stalemate against Jassem Abdulrahman in the last round. and Shoja'at Qane' tied at No. two. Chess players from Iran, the UAE, Azerbaijan, and Russia competed in the Sharjah-based event.

"Iran Invites 26 to National Football Camp"
Iran's Football Federation called up 26 to attend the national camp, which starts on November 8. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said on Friday he was upset when Tottenham Hotspur sacked their manager Glenn Hoddle in September. Hoddle, a player under Wenger at Monaco in the late 1980s, was persuaded by Wenger to pursue a coaching career after his playing days ended and the two men have remained close friends since then.

"Beckenbauer Demands Reaction From Sluggish Bayern"
Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has criticized the team for being sluggish and urged the champions to restore pride in Sunday's Bundesliga clash with archrivals Borussia Dortmund. "Mihajlovic Given Eight-Match Ban for Kicking and Spitting"
Sinisa Mihajlovic of Lazio was suspended for eight matches by UEFA's Disciplinary Committee on Friday after being sent off against Chelsea in Tuesday's Champions League match in Rome. He was also fined 20,000 Swiss francs ($14,560) for what UEFA described as his "particularly unsporting behavior" and also because of his poor previous disciplinary record.
